(THE GIST OF PIB) Rightful targeting of beneficiaries

[December-2020]

Rightful targeting of beneficiaries

  • As per government data, 4.39 crore bogus ration cards have been weeded out since 2013 for rightful targeting of beneficiaries under NFSA.
  • It is a part of technology-driven PDS reforms across the country to modernise the Targeted Public Distribution System (PDS) and to improve the transparency and efficiency.

Various PDS reforms include:

  • Digitization of ration cards/beneficiaries' databases,
  • Aadhaar seeding,
  • detection of ineligible/bogus ration cards,
  • de-duplication of digitised data.

Key objectives:

  • NFSA provides highly subsidised food grains through TPDS to 81.35 Crore persons with rice at Rs 3/kg, wheat at Rs 2/kg, and coarse grains at Re 1/kg — from their designated FPS of TPDS.
  • Its objective is to provide for food and nutritional security in the human life cycle approach, by ensuring access to adequate quantities of quality food at affordable prices to people to live a life with dignity.
  • NFSA covers up to 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population in the country.
  • Currently, Manipur has the highest coverage in rural areas across the country (88.56%), while Andaman & Nicobar Islands has the lowest (24.94%).
