Hello
I am also an aspirant for Civil Services Examinations. Whatever I can suggest you, I am happy to do so.
The schemes and syllabus for the examination are readily available on this site as well as UPSC site. you can visit there.
http://www.upsc.gov.in/
click on general -> examination conducted by upsc-> civil services prilims
As I am also a software engineer, I want to say that we have to take any arts paper for the examination. In my opinion, Public Administration, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology etc will be most suitable for us, but what will be the best, it depends on you. Review there syllabus, and whatever you find interesting in your opinion, choose it.
If possible then join for coaching classes and discussion groups. they are beneficial in two ways, first of all they make routine best, and second you will get the best material there.
Best of Luck
Gopal Krishna

Hi all,
My name is Prayas Verma and currently I am working as software developer with satyam computer services ltd. To be an IAS officer has been my dream since my childhood.
I want to start my preps. for the same. kindly help me out.
how should i start my preps., which coaching institute should i join, where i can get the study material to start of with and anything that can help me out.
Most importantly i want to know that what and how can i study to start my preps while being in job.
any of your suggestions will surely help me.

Hi Prayas,
First step : select your optional subjects(2) which gives you interest in reading - ex: since you are from scientific background, the best first optional would be MATHEMATICS.
Second optional can be any optional with semi-scientific subject - like Geography.(check your interest by reading NCERT books on Geo)
Second Step : Start your preparation with these optionals. search for institute which provide good coaching and good material.
Step 3 : Simultaneously start ur GS prep. Read paper regularly and NCERT books.See syllabus and previous question papers.

Next abviously prepare strategy for your preparation.
