(Success Story) Dr Srinivas got 149th rank in UPSC exam

Success Stroy : Dr Srinivas got 149th rank in UPSC exam

Radha Bai, a government higher primary school teacher and her husband Ashok, a petty shop owner, in a village Shigga in Sorab taluk Shimoga district, were jubilant. Their son Dr Srinivas passed the UPSC exam with 149th rank.

Srinivas is the first candidate from the Katik (butcher) community in south India to pass the UPSC exam, pointed out Siddaramanna, a leader of the community.

“In fact, he is the first to get a medical degree in our family,’’ points out Radha Bai.

Srinivas, who is medical officer in General Hospital, Sorab, took no coaching for the UPSC exam from well-known institutions but just relied on mock interviews and shortterm courses.

“He has been very studious since his young age. But we never dreamt he would become an IAS officer,’’ says his father Ashok. “We would have felt great if we could have educated him upto SSLC. Later, we thought he would stop with a PU. To our surprise, he got a merit seat for MBBS and got a medical degree from Mysore Medical College,’’ said Ashok, who has studied only upto SSLC.

Srinivas too had no IAS dreams. But as a student in Mysore, he was inspired by the then deputy commissioner there Kumar Naik. His senior in college, also called Srinivas and now in the Foreign Service, had also inspired him.

Medical science was one of the subjects for the UPSC. The other paper was Kannada literature. “Because I love that language,’’ Srinivas said.
