What is it?

  • Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and Ministry of Urban Development launched the scheme in ten important cities of India which are located on the banks of the river Ganga.

  • Ten Cities are: Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mathura-Vrindavan, Varanasi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Lucknow, Patna, Sahibgunj and Barrackpore.

  • The project is mainly for rejuvenation of the Ganga river banks and gradually more cities will be included in times to come.

Who has chosen these cities?

  • National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has chosen these cities in the first phase for infrastructure development for sewage treatment.

  • This will be on hybrid annuity mode based on PPP model.

What is the objective of this scheme?

  • Effective abetment of pollution and development of river Ganga.

  • Maintain ecological flows within the river Ganga.

  • Ensure water quality and sustainable development along the banks of the river.

How will they achieve it?

  • Adoption of river basin approach and multi-sectoral coordination.

  • New Sewage treatment process.

  • Enhanced drainage system.

  • Hybrid annuity PPP model for funding the projects.

  • District level monitoring committee.

  • Scheme is 100% centrally sponsored.
