What is SAARC Youth Conference?

• It is a dialogue among youth parliamentarians of the SAARC region to create democratic space to meet the mounting expectation of the rapidly increasing youth population in the region.
• The first ever South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Youth Parliamentarians Conference was held in Islamabad, Pakistan in August 2016.
• The theme of the summit was 'Peace and Harmony for Development'.

• To build bridges between the future leaders of south Asia.
• It seeks to set the foundation of strong inter-parliamentary linkages between parliamentarians across south Asia.
• The linkages will be to set up a network that can nurture regional interaction, support democratic norms, build a coalition for sustained dialogue and peaceful cooperation.

What will be its short term and long term Impact?

Short Term: It can be utilised to address on-going contentious issue between countries and also forge a common agenda to be addressed in the Summit level SAARC meeting. Further, its use as a rapport building platform for the future leaders is paramount.

Long Term: Future leaders can build a mechanism to resolve the disputes and move ahead with a common vision of South Asia.

Conclusion

The conference is one among many initiative by the SAARC to instil faith, vision, growth and leadership among the corresponding countries. However its fate will depend upon the engagement level of these leaders on the platforms other than only policy making. Further, since this region has similarity of history, religion and way of life therefore it may provide the way forward for a European Union like SAARC Union provided border disputes are taken care of.
