Success Story : From village boys to civil servants

Success never tasted so good, says the all-India topper among men

It has been a long journey for Virender Kumar Sharma. The topper among boys in the Civil Services examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Sharma had never thought he would make it in his first chance, also his last one since he is already 35.

Not only did he achieve the feat, but he also set an example by choosing Punjabi as one of his subjects.

An engineer, a PCS officer and now an IAS, Sharma did not let his disability—polio struck him when he was two years old—come in his way as he bagged the fourth all-India rank in the exam.

Son of a teacher couple—his parents work in government schools in Sangrur —Sharma studied in the Government High School in Lachdu Kala village in Sangrur. After Class XII, he opted for engineering and passed out of the Punjab Engineering College in 1994 with a BE degree in electrical engineering. Virender joined the Punjab State Electricity Board as an SDO the same year.
